New Year Tryout:
Chinese Proficiency Progression Assessment
To provide an effective assessment for Chinese learners, a solid base for progression study in the new year and strong support for employment, eCompuChinese Education Association will host first Chinese Proficiency Progression Assessment on Saturday, February 9th, from 2pm to 5pm, at Metro eLearning (2nd floor, Metro Square Mall).
The Assessment is first come first test, and the assessment contents, in 8 levels, cover daily conversation words and high frequency words. Assessment employs Windows PC and standard QWERTY keyboard. Participants can choose either traditional or simplified Chinese, and Pinyin or Bopomo input method for test. Assessment fee is 5 dollars Canadian.
China’s rapid economic growth in recent years propelled the global trend of Chinese learning. Chinese has quickly became a must-take course for overseas students and must-have skills for some professionals. Based on the user population, mastering Chinese, English and computer skills will certainly add enormous advantage to you. For studying Chinese overseas, due to differences in environment, motivation, course load and teaching material, teachers, parents and students often have difficulty in accurate assessment. For instance, after years of study, a student may be able to understand and speak Chinese, but he/she does not read, or he/she may be able to read and write, but once having Pinyin removed, he/she can not pronounce the word and read out properly, in both cases, the basic language learning objective is not achieved.
A language is all about communication, besides being able to understand and express proper meaning orally, being able to read and communicate via writing are also desired. Communication via writing has been transformed into “via computer”. No matter it is web search, instant message or email, as long as it is information exchange and application in our everyday life, Chinese inputting just can not be left out. Therefore the listen/speak/read/type ability of Chinese surely became must-have Professional Skills for entering professional job market and global Chinese market. On May 9th, 2007, the USA had its first Advanced Placement examination for Chinese course. Following the trend and demand, this AP exam first time used Chinese input via computer to replace paper pen for writing the exam.
Test takers of Chinese Proficiency Progression Assessment not only need to know the words and the pronunciations, but also need to know how to properly use Pinyin or Bopomo to input words with correct tones. More importantly, due to many Chinese words being of the same pronunciation or similar shape, the test takers also need to be quick on telling words apart and selecting the right word in order to improve typing accuracy and speed. Chinese Proficiency Progression Assessment includes high frequency words, phrases and sentence patterns used in daily conversation as testing scope, has 8 levels, about 100 words each level, totalling about 2000 words with derivatives. If an attendee can reach level 8, it means he/she can read and understand 80% of Chinese newspaper publications in the market.
Because Chinese Proficiency Progression Assessment tends to encourage high participation and to help learners gain more interest and confidence, eCompuChinese Education Association has published vocabulary for each assessment level on its website. Led by this annual assessment, eCompuChinese Education Association lets students review and practice repeatedly, hence achieves the goal of “test every year, progress every year”.
